An individual earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that participants estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But the odds had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," stated a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A new rule presented on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from elections to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
