Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
