Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police say initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any harm in connection with the event," they added.
City officials said they were working "to solve the case" and have requested to the residents for information.
A senior representative said the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
